Comparing Experiential Awareness Therapy with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - Enhanced

Experiential Awareness Therapy: 
A pilot trial, comparing Experiential Awareness Therapy with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – Enhanced 

This study is evaluating a group therapy, Experiential Awareness Therapy, for people experiencing problems with eating and how they feel about their bodies. Experiential Awareness Therapy is an evidenced-based therapy aimed at helping those who find eating normally is a problem.

Benefits of participating 
This therapy will aim to:
• Increase your ability to manage your emotions.
• Increase your positive feelings about yourself and explore how you feel about other people.
• Improve your ability to identify and understand your emotions and also identify other people’s emotions.
• Help you understand how these skills might help to reduce your difficulties with eating.
Increasing these skills has been shown to be helpful for recovery from problems with eating and may also improve the quality of a person’s life.

Participation in this study
If you choose to participate in this research trial you will receive free, weekly, group therapy from a psychologist who has a lot of experience in Eating Disorders therapy. You will be randomly allocated into one of two different therapies either Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Enhanced or Experiential Awareness Therapy. Random allocation is a little like tossing a coin – you will receive one of either therapies. Both will be held weekly for 10 weeks, with a follow-up session three months after you finish the group. Sessions will run for 2-hours each time.

By participating in either of the group therapies you will have the opportunity to have discussion about your own thoughts and feelings about eating and how you feel about your body, as well as consider different ways of thinking and acting. Those who are allocated to the Experiential Awareness Therapy will complete short meditations and gentle movement-based activities.
