Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV) has welcomed the $3million in funding for workforce, online and phone support services that was announced by Minister for Health Greg Hunt, during yesterday’s launch of the National Agenda for Eating Disorders 2017-2022.

EDV looks forward to working with the Butterfly Foundation and other eating disorders organisations to ensure those with an eating disorder get help at the right time.

EDV CEO Jennifer Beveridge said Victoria has been at the forefront of the eating disorder sector, providing support for people with an eating disorder and their families since 1991.

“For the past four years EDV has been providing a Primary Health Professional Development workshop for GPs, nurses, dietitians, personal trainers, community and welfare workers through our Education Program.”

“Additionally, since 2013 EDV has provided training to over 1700 GPs in Victoria,” Ms Beveridge said.”

EDV’s Primary Health Professional Development program has increased health professional’s knowledge and skills in diagnosing eating disorders and referring people on to get support. The program facilitates greater awareness of the early warning signs and intervention, diagnostic information, treatment options and support information for families and carers, including linking people to other services and support.

Ms Beveridge said this valuable and longstanding program provides training for GPs in partnership with the Royal College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and includes Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points to GPs who undertake Category 1 and Category 2 programs.

“EDV has been helping and supporting people with an eating disorder, their families and carer’s navigate the health system to get the best support available for recovery. Often we are the first point of contact for many people with an eating disorder,” Ms Beveridge said.

EDV runs a free Helpline service from 9.30am - 5pm Monday – Friday. This service is staffed by trained volunteers who have a special interest in eating disorders. Many of the team have either recovered from an eating disorder or been a carer for a loved one. The Helpline is confidential and provides information and support for people experiencing eating disorders related issues.
