We know that the support families and friends provide to someone in recovery from an eating disorder is very important. We also know that caring for someone with an eating disorder is a huge job and can be challenging role that can be associated with stress. It is important to ensure that those caring for someone with an eating disorder takes the time to care for themselves and their own wellbeing.

The Collaborative Care Skills Workshop (CCSW) is an evidence based intervention which was developed by Janet Treasure and associates in the UK. The series of six-seven workshops aim to improve carer’s wellbeing, coping strategies and problem solving skills whilst they are supporting someone in their recovery from an eating disorder. Designed for carers, it is suggested that parents, partners, siblings or friends may attend.

Key elements in the workshop include:

  • Learning about caring styles
  • Developing skills to help support a loved one
  • Understand what may be happening in your loved one’s mind
  • Increase your awareness of the effects of an eating disorder on behaviour
  • Explore communication styles and develop problem solving skills
  • Highlight, identify and promote opportunities for self-care
  • Learn, practise and apply new skills to support and encourage recovery
  • Connect with others going through a similar experience

Evaluation from both the UK, where CCSW originated, and in Australia demonstrate the effectiveness of the program. Evidence suggests the workshops reduce carer distress, improve interaction skills to better care for loved ones with an eating disorder.
