Board Director

About the Organisation

Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV) is the primary source of support, information, community education and advocacy for people with eating disorders and their families in Victoria.  Our vision is to connect those whose lives are affected by eating disorders with the people, services and hope they need for recovery.

EDV is a non-government, community based charitable organisation, and is funded partly by the Victorian Government Department of Health and Human Services.  We are unique in providing a comprehensive support and information service on all aspects of eating disorders.  We are also unique in our provision of non-clinical help through a blend of qualified professionals and lived experience.  Through our Helpline, website, support services, schools program, treatment service and community education we have a direct impact on the mental health and wellbeing of thousands of Victorians every year.

A core team of permanent employees works closely with a strong base of volunteers who are trained by EDV and who assist in a variety of roles. Volunteers are drawn both from the health professional sector and from people with lived experience of eating disorders.

About the role

The EDV Board of Directors comprises up to 9 members with substantial skills and expertise, drawn from the corporate, private, public and community sectors. The Board members work in a voluntary capacity to provide strategic oversight and governance in line with EDV’s mission.

We have a vacancy on the board due to the recent resignation of a long serving member. EDV is now seeking a director who ideally has worked in the education sector, preferably as a senior teacher in either primary or secondary schools with leadership responsibilities.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate effective communication skills and strong relationship building capabilities. Knowledge of the community and/or health sector is an advantage but not a prerequisite. The board member will be expected to attend all board meetings, join a subcommittee and support the strategic plan of the organisation.

The time commitment will be in the vicinity of 6-8 hours/mth.

All board members are required to be paid members of EDV.

Selection Criteria

Our ideal candidate would be an educator/teacher with leadership experience, such as year level coordinator, head of school, or principal level. In addition, skills/experience in at least one other of the following is preferred:

  • Governance experience as a board member, or CEO experience
  • Health promotion, community education or health education
  • Marketing or public relations
  • Government relations, public policy
  • Fundraising or sponsorship initiatives
  • Lived experience of an eating disorder as someone who is recovered or as a carer/family member, partner or friend of someone affected by an eating disorder
