Preventing Eating Disorders

Key Risk Factors
Eating Disorders Victoria recognises four key risk factors which often coincide with the development and perpetuation of an eating disorder. Some individuals are more prone to these risk factors by way of inherent personality traits, although it is often a combination of internal tendencies as well as exposure to triggers in the external environment which lead to the onset of an eating disorder. Dieting, poor body image, low self esteem and perfectionism are recognised as key risk factors in the development of an eating disorder, and their relationship is often intertwined in a self-perpetuating cycle.Last Updated: May 2010
