Guidelines for Reporters

Because of the sensitive and complicated nature of eating disorders, it is of absolute importance that all media stories focusing on the topic of eating disorders are compiled responsibly to avoid publicising images or stories which may encourage disordered eating behaviour, or trigger unhealthy behaviours.

Eating Disorders Victoria has developed a set of media reporting guidelines, which outlines tips and suggestions for journalists, to encourage responsible and respectful reporting on the topic of eating disorders.

Wherever possible, please include the Eating Disorders Helpline number 1300 550 236 at the conclusion of stories about eating disorders. This is particularly necessary when graphic details, such eating disorder behaviours, are included in a story. Providing graphic information on eating disorder behaviour can inadvertently glamorise the illness or promote experimentation with these life-threatening behaviours.
