EDV in the Media
The topic of eating disorders, body image and dieting are of increasingly high interest within the media. Being Victoria’s primary source of information and education on eating disorders, EDV receives a number of media enquiries seeking facts, quotes and positions on a number of issues within the media. EDV also aims to be proactive in its approach with the media in raising awareness on all topics surrounding eating disorders. Below is a summary of the EDV’s recent media activity:
December 2009 - May 2010
- Education Officer for EDV, Naomi Crafti spoke with Melbourne Talk Radio MTR1377 about males and body image concerns
- Megan O'Connon, EDV's PR and Communication Officer spoke with the Whitehorse Leader in regards to politician Kristen Fiffe's question raised in Parliament about services available to eating disorder sufferers in the easten suburbs
- Naomi Crafti EDV's Education Officer spoke with The Age's Insight liftout for a feature article titled 'Getting Real About Fashion'
- Journalist Sarah Wilson wrote about her experiences of Mindful Eating in The Sunday Age's Life Magazine and referred to EDV's program
- Eating Disorder's Victoria's helpline was promoted in a Sunday Herald Sun article about males and body image concerns
- EDV's Education Officer Naomi Crafti was interviewed by radio stations 774 ABC radio's Hilary Harper and JOY FM about International No Diet Day and the Mindful Eating workshop held at the Town Hall.
- The Monash Journal spoke with Naomi Crafti about the Mulgrave Building Hope workshops.
- 3AW and The Helald Sun spoke with EDV's PR and Communications Officer Megan O'Connor about Federal Minister Kate Ellis' appearance in Grazia.
- Perth radio station RTR FM spoke with Naomi Crafti about pica, a form of EDNOS.
- Cleo magazine contacted EDV in regards to orthorexia in young women for an article they are writing.
- EDV's PR and Communications Officer Megan O'Connor was contacted by the Herald Sun and A Current Affair about the weight of a contestant on Australia's Next Top Model.
- Kara Irving, a freelance writer contacted EDV about a story she was writing on anorexia athletica.
- EDV was contacted by Channel 7 for a story they were doing on binge eating.
August - November 2009
- EDV's Family Support Officer Helen Franks was interviewed by ABC radio about the Building Hope workshop that was held in Bendigo in July and August.
- EDV's Education Officer Naomi Crafti and EDV volunteer speaker Samantha Ratnam both appeared on Joy FM's Hear Me Raw program to discuss eating disorders.
- EDV's Communications Officer Megan O'Connor was interviewed by Who magazine for their Body Image special edition.
- EDV's Executive Officer Kirsty Greenwood and Megan O'Connor met with The Age's health reporter Julia Medew to give background information on EDV and discuss the current state of eating disorder treatment services in Victoria.
- Cosmopolitan magazine and the Australian Women's Weekly contacted EDV to interview recovered speakers from our Speakers, Writers and Artists Bank for upcoming articles.
- EDV's Kirsty Greenwood and Naomi Crafti were interviewed for a feature article in The Australian newspaper about eating disorders.
June/July 2009
- EDV Education Officer Naomi Crafti also provided some tips on improving body image to Dolly Magazine.
- Kirsty Greenwood provided a statement to the Herald Sun about comments made by the UK's Vogue editor criticising the small size of clothes provided by designers which forced magazines to use thin models in photo shoots.
- Kirsty Greenwood and Natalie Wild were interviewed by Joy FM about the warning signs of eating disorders, especially in young men.
April/May 2009
- Kirsty Greenwood was interviewed by ABC Radio 774, ABC Radio Ballarat and QUT radio and Naomi Crafti by SYN radio all on International No Diet Day.
- Kirsty Greenwood also appeared on ABC Radio 774 Health and Fitness program along with Claire Diffey from CEED to discuss eating disorders.
- A Westmead Hospital Study into children with eating disorders saw EDV brief Channel 7's Sunday Night program, Mother's Matter magazine and EDV's Family Support Officer Helen Franks was interviewed by the Sydney Morning Herald on parent's experiences of caring for children and adolescents with eating disorders.
- EDV also issued media releases about International No Diet Day and on concerns about the health of a Miss Universe Australia finalist.
February/March 2009

- Our new Education Officer Naomi Crafti was interviewed by Good Health and Medicine Magazine about mindful eating and by S-Press magazine about the Mission Australia Youth Survey results and body image issues in young people.
December/January 2008/09
- SBS News interviewed Kirsty Greenwood in response to the Federal Government formation of the Office for Youth and introduction of the Voluntary Media Code of Conduct on body image.
- EDV provided information on eating disorders and negative body image for an article for Women’s Health and Fitness magazine.

- EDV’s Recovery Support Officer Natalie Wild featured on the Richard Stubbs program on ABC Radio 774 to promote EDV’s support services and raise awareness of eating disorders.
- The Sunday Herald Sun quoted EDV’s Executive Officer Kirsty Greenwood in an article about the rise of “Bridal Boot Camps” promoting extreme dieting and exercise programs for brides and bridesmaids.
- The Age and 3AW quoted EDV regarding a very thin contestant on Channel 7’s Make Me a Supermodel program.
- EDV support group convener and speaker Samantha Ratnam was profiled in the Moreland Leader about her experience with an eating disorder and her road to recovery. EDV Recovery Officer Natalie Wild was also quoted in the article, which included information about the new Collingwood support group.
National Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Week was held in early September 2008 which generated the following media events:
- EDV Board Member Dr Andrew Kennedy was interviewed by ABC Radio National’s breakfast program on the prevalence of eating disorders amongst boys and the importance of raising awareness of eating disorders amongst the general community.
- EDV Speaker Carol Bull and EDV Education Officer Natasha Jeremiejczyk were featured in Who Magazine and did a fantastic job at raising awareness about eating disorders and Binge Eating Disorder in particular.
- Natalie Wild was also interviewed by Fox FM and ABC Radio Albury about EDV’s support services.
June/July 2008
- EDV’s Recovery Support Officer Natalie Wild was a panelist on Rural Health Education Foundations satellite television broadcast on eating disorders. Rural Health Education Foundation is an independent, accredited education service to general practitioners and other health professionals working in rural and remote Australia. Nat joined a panel of other eating disorder experts in providing information and advice to rural health care professionals on how to support patients with an eating disorder.
- The Knox Leader published information on EDV’s recent Community Awareness Evening held in Knox.
- Triple M and Herald Sun contacted EDV regarding the release of figures indicating an increase in admission of young people for eating disorder treatment at Westmead Hospital in Sydney.
- EDV was also contacted by Dolly magazine for input into a quiz about eating habits of Dolly readers.
April/May 2008
- The Herald Sun contacted the EDV about Nigella Lawson’s weight and to discuss general body image issues.
- The Age wrote a feature article about the increasing demand for treatment for anorexia and other eating disorders at Melbourne hospitals. EDV statistics were used extensively throughout the articles and our helpline number and web address included.
- The EDV received several media inquiries regarding International No Diet Day including ABC Radio, the Progress Leader, Stonnington Leader, Knox Leader, 2QUT, Neos Kosmos newspaper and EDV Vice President Gill Ryan appeared on Channel 10’s 9AM with David and Kim.
- Kirsty Greenwood was interviewed by Nova 100 and Fox FM on the controversial use of a thin model at Australian Fashion Week.
- Kirsty was also interviewed for 3AW news regarding comments made by judges on the television program “Australia’s Next Top Model” about a contestant’s weight.
February/March 2008
- The Herald Sun contacted EDV regarding the results of a global survey which said 35% of Australians would not give up their love of fatty fast food, instead preferring to rely on weight-loss programs and diets to shed excess weight.
- The Age contacted EDV for comment regarding a US study published in Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, stating that eating family meals together can help prevent teenage girls developing disordered eating. The release of these findings prompted several media inquiries including a Radio 2CC interview with Kirsty Greenwood and a Today Tonight interview with Kirsty Greenwood and Recovery Support Officer, Natalie Wild.
- The Sunday Age ran a feature article on Body Image issues faced by adolescents. EDV was quoted with regards to the Federal Government’s introduction of the “Healthy Kids Check” which includes weighing 4 year olds and assessing their BMI. Following the Sunday Age article, 5AA in Adelaide called EDV to arrange an interview on their afternoon program to discuss BMI and general body image issues in young people.
- EDV was also quoted in a media statement released by the Queensland Minister for Women, The Honourable Margaret Keech, urging women and girls to get off the dieting treadmill and embrace healthy eating.
- Media inquiries were received from Dolly magazine, Fox FM and New Idea.
November/December 2007
- FOX FM ran a Body Love campaign focusing on positive body image. EDV have provided considerable information to FOX and 3 members of the speaker’s bank, Natalie Wild, Aggie Gioftsidis and Kellie Raymond and EDV Executive Officer Kirsty Greenwood have been interviewed. Parts of their interviews will be aired as part of FOX FM news bulletins, with the full interviews placed on the FOX FM website.
- The EDV helpline and website were included at the end of an article by The Herald Sun on French model Isabelle Caro who has suffered from anorexia for 15 years.
- EDV issued a media release in response to Mission Australian 2007 Youth Survey that showed over 32% of young people were concerned about body image.
- MX newspaper Jani White from the Royal Melbourne Hospital Eating Disorder Unit was quoted as saying that twice as many anorexia sufferers are hooked on exercise workouts, compared to last years figures. The EDV helpline number was published.
- EDV were contacted for comment by The Sunday Age on the proliferation of slimming products such as meal replacement shakes and their availability to teenagers. EDV’s Executive Officer Kirsty Greenwood was quoted – “People engaged in extreme dieting were 18 times more likely to develop eating disorders.” She also said “these products could be very dangerous to children because they don’t have the physical reserves that adults do to sustain rapid weight loss.”
