Schools

School teachers are in a unique position to be involved in the early identification and support of students at risk of an eating disorder.  Due to the prevalence of disordered eating and its consequences, prevention and early intervention is an important goal.

Eating Disorders Victoria, in conjunction with the Centre for Excellence in Eating Disorders (CEED) has developed a resource manual for secondary schools, to assist you with the vital task of prevention and early intervention for eating disorders.

Hard copies of the Secondary Schools Resource Manual can be purchased from EDV for $20 plus postage and handling – please go to our online shop or tel 03 9885 6563 to order a copy.

OR you can Download the Secondary Schools Resource Manual FREE.

Eating Disorders Victoria (EDV) provides professional development workshops to assist school teachers, school counsellors and school welfare officers to develop and implement strategies for the prevention of and early intervention in eating disorders.

Workshops, presentations and groups are run by EDV-trained presenters and are tailored to specific audiences based on the individual needs and requests of our clients. Most workshops will cover the following content:
  • Types of eating disorders
  • Warning signs
  • Risk Factors
  • Treatment options and recovery
  • Intervention
  • Prevention
At the completion of a workshop, schools staff will typically:
  • Have a greater understanding of the relevance of body image, dieting, perfectionism and self-esteem to the development of eating disorders;
  • Better detect students who may be at risk of developing, or who are experiencing, an eating disorder;
  • More confidently and competently intervene and  provide support to students who are showing the warning signs of an eating disorder;
  • Be able to devise and implement new school strategies and develop skills to aid in reducing the incidence of eating disorders.
The Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria is funded by the Department of Human Services as the State-wide Specialist in the non-clinical education of the community in the area of eating disorders.
