Eating Disorders and Older People
Despite the stereotype that eating disorders are problems which solely affect adolescents and young women, the truth remains that an eating disorder is a serious mental illness which can affect males and females of all ages and backgrounds. The common risk factors, such as a perfectionist personality type, low self esteem, external stress and a desire to gain control over certain aspects of a person’s life are most certainly prevalent for middle-aged and older people, and thus this age group is just as vulnerable to developing an eating disorder as any other.
There are several risk factors and issues specific to eating disorders and their impact on older people.
