Risk Factors
While there are a number of reasons a child may develop disordered eating behaviours, it is important for parents and teachers to be aware of the factors and characteristics which represent potential grounds for the development of an eating disorder. The most crucial concept to note is that an eating disorder is NOT about food – it is a coping mechanism for an individual who is struggling with aspects of their inner or outer world in which they feel they have no control. This may be major traumas such as divorce or death, or simple events such as changing schools or moving house.
