Due to the prevalence of disordered eating and its consequences, prevention and early intervention is an important goal. Eating disorders occur in a socio-cultural context and multiple domains contribute to one's level of risk. Considering the potentially relative importance of socio-cultural influences over familial, psychological, or physiological factors, it makes sense to target the socio-cultural environment.

The D.E.L.I.V.E.R (Delivering Eating Disorder Learning Initiatives Via Education and Resources) project aims to identify and meet the training requirements of workers in non-clinical settings, so that they can better detect people they interact with who may be at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder, more confidently and competently intervene at a non-clinical, non-treating level with people they have identified as at risk of, or with, an eating disorder, and implement effective health promotion strategies to reduce the incidence of disordered eating.

A literature review, focus groups, interviews and questionnaires were undertaken to ascertain current knowledge in eating disorders, their prevention, detection and non-clinical intervention, as well as to gain further understanding of how to meet worker resource and training needs.

The result of the extensive development process is four accurate and informative resources, and accompanying training workshops for each target group in the identification, early intervention, support and prevention of eating disorders.

Target groups include:

The DELIVER resources and education program aims to meet the resource and training requirements of workers in a non-clinical setting so that they can:

  • Better detect people who may be at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder·
  • More confidently and competently intervene and support people at risk of, or experiencing an eating disorder·
  • Implement effective strategies, and develop skills to aid in reducing the incidence of eating disorders

Training is a one to four hour practical workshop that enables skill development and confidence building of participants and is accompanied by an appropriate, easy to use reference manual.
