Seperating the symptoms and underlying issues |
It is important when supporting someone through the recovery process to be mindful of the distinction between the symptoms of the disorder, and the underlying issues. For many people the symptoms of the disorder will improve or disappear before the underlying causes of the disorder have been completely dealt with. Remember that while this may be an important stage of recovery, it may not necessarily mean that everything is okay. Many people require continuing support and encouragement beyond the cessation of their eating disordered symptoms. If they have been relying on their eating behaviour to help them cope or deal with their feelings, there will most likely be a period where new strategies need to be tried and this can be a very difficult process. Remember that weight restoration and breaking the eating disordered behaviours are really positive signs, but the person may feel even more vulnerable now than they did in the midst of the disorder.
